An ode to Fall by Armand Tatossian

 Text by Mary Tatossian

There is something mystically alluring about Quebec’s fleeting yet spectacular Fall. Thankfully Armand overpowering obsession with color & light somehow allowed him to capture that same magic for the viewing pleasure of future generations to come.

But interestingly, when you hold one of Armand’s canvases in your hands, like an optical illusion, up close the same magical painting appears as unrelated globs of paint, indiscriminately flung together in some silly, whimsical manner. Irrational splotches of turquoise, mauve, teal and vermilion flung haphazardly in what appears to be a tree, an impulsive magenta line and cobalt shadow constitutes the trunk. Dribbles of fuchsia juxtaposed with lime green. You think- surely it must be in error... But take a few steps back and it all enchantingly mingles and merges giving life, depth and dimension to a spectacular awestruck landscape. Colors that seemed random are anything but. I would often joke with my brother, saying he was myopic. He worked so quickly and rarely took steps back, so how did he know it would all come together so perfectly.

I believe PhD Art Historian, Rigas Bertos baptized my brother the “Master of Light” for this very reason back the late 70’s, in the dawn of Armand’s career. Dr. Bertos eloquently described Armand’s work as follows:
“Magnificent colors, brought into strong relation through robust yet discreet compositional structures, seem to be the dominant element of his canvases. Colors strong sharply defined and ready to move at the same time. A continuous oscillation, an incessant movement, a dynamic potential of change constitute some of the principal virtues of his (Tatossian’s) “oeuvre”. Nothing is arbitrary: The moving force, the real protagonist of the drama of colors and shapes is always Light, the elusive ever changing Creator of things, which Armand has always succeeded to encapsulate in his paintings."
In fact, if I didn’t know better, I would swear that John Donne was thinking of one of my brother’s Fall oil canvas when he wrote “The Autumnal” in the 17th Century: “No spring, nor summer beauty hath such grace as I have seen in one autumnal face."

Without further ado, I will let you be the judge and present: An Ode to Fall by Armand Tatossian, RCA

Your feedback and impressions are always welcome.

Losing Inspiration by By Ashliegh Gehl for the Herald de Paris September 3, 2012

Three years ago, I found a beautifully written tribute to Armand by Ashleigh Gehl. Both touched and intrigued, I reached out to Ms. Gehl to find out which painting inspired her eloquent article.

Today, it brings me great pleasure to share with you, both the tribute and the work of art behind the inspiration...

BELLEVILLE (Herald de Paris) — The backdrop of my laptop is wallpapered with a photograph of Gabriel García Márquez. He’s looking dapper. Dressed in a white suit with shoes to match, the only splash of colour comes from a bright yellow shirt with a collar up to his ears. I imagine it cotton, light on the skin.

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN: ONE YEAR- A Celebration of Life

Copied from Originally post on Facebook dated August 23, 2013

It was exactly a year ago today that I unexpectedly lost my big brother. I miss my brother more than words can say.... Losing someone you love is never easy, but when their life is taken away at such a young age, it is that much more difficult. I can talk about all his achievements and career but anyone can find that information on the net... Instead I’d like to give some insight about the man, the brother, the friend, the father who lived behind the paint and thick brushstrokes.

Introduction

Welcome to the Armand Tatossian Foundation
, a non-profit the Estate set up with the primary mission to promote, preserve and strengthen the Armand Tatossian market as well as preserve Armand Tatossian’s legacy.

To this end, we are striving to locate and identify works by Armand in anticipation of preparing a catalog containing a definitive and comprehensive compendium of all known original artworks. Additionally, we are hoping that this very exercise will help locate the highest caliber works, so that in the event of future Armand Tatossian Retrospective(s) and/or publications, lithographs, etc. we can contact respective owners for their participation.

Artists' Catalogs also carry a certain historic value and can later be referenced should someone ever wish to sell or transfer title of any of the works in their collection. Additionally, it is recognized that a well-documented history & clear provenance can always be useful when providing lineage and can increase the value of a painting over time.

If you have an art work by Armand Tatossian and you'd like to be sure it is included in the complete catalog of the artist's work, please email the replies to the following along with a good quality photos of the front, close up of the signature and a picture of the back of the painting.
